Scott Kelby's Digital Photography Boxed Set, Volumes 1, 2, and 3

Review of #5 “Scott Kelby’s Digital Photography Boxed Set, Volumes 1, 2, and 3″

Review by K. Benny: “Tips and tricks ‘from a friend’”

This reviewer’s rating: 4/5, average reviewer rating: 4.5/5

In the usual Scott Kelby style he write these books as a collection of pointers to a friend photographer. Every page in all three books are written with one pointer or tip on each page. As Scott writes in the prelude:

David Buschs Canon EOS Rebel T1i/500D Guide to Digital SLR Photography (First Edition)

Review of #4 “David Buschs Canon EOS Rebel T1i/500D Guide to Digital SLR Photography (First Edition)”

Review by FredM: “The Scott Kelby of camera guides”

This reviewer’s rating: 5/5, average reviewer rating: 5/5

When it comes to useful camera guides, David Busch is the master. (The cover blurb notes that he is the #1 selling camera specific guide author, and I can understand why.) Like Scott Kelby he explains everything you need to know in a comprehensive yet conversational way, with lots of examples of how to use his tips. He provides something that none of the other guides, mostly rehashes of the vendor’s manual, are able to do. Busch gives you an in-depth introduction to a camera like the Canon EOS Rebel T1i and to photography at the same time.

Books Review of the Week: “The Digital Photography Book, Volume 3″

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Every week, we showcase an Amazon user review from an item on the current Science and Technology Books Pop Fifty list. Here’s your review of the week for this week!

The Digital Photography Book, Volume 3

Review of #3 “The Digital Photography Book, Volume 3″

Review by Phil Pickering: “Essential”

This reviewer’s rating: 5/5, average reviewer rating: 4.5/5

“The Digital Photography Book, Volume 3″ is another fine addition to the series, but unlike many of Scott Kelby’s books which usually stand on their own, to get the most out of this book you really, really should have bought and read the previous two volumes. For example, the first two chapters, “Using Flash Like a Pro, Part 2″ and “Using Your Studio Like A Pro”, are direct continuations of chapters in Volume 2. Both are excellent chapters and give much needed depth to the subjects which were introduced in the previous volume.

Books Review of the Week: “Podcasting For Dummies”

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Every week, we showcase an Amazon user review from an item on the current Science and Technology Books Pop Fifty list. Here’s your review of the week for this week!

Podcasting For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))

Review of #1 “Podcasting For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))”

Review by Sublime Dharma: “The. Best. Book. On. Podcasting.”

This reviewer’s rating: 5/5, average reviewer rating: 4.5/5

I bought this book around 1 month ago because I wanted to set up a Podcast and publish it to the web but had no idea how. The moment I opened the cover this book was helpful, it walks you through everything you need to know to set up and publish your Podcast, choose equipment, do interview over the phone, in the studio, or over Skype/iChat and then recommends other For Dummies books if you want to get really into it (say, Web Design for dummies, or something)…

The Digital Photography Book

Review of #2 “The Digital Photography Book”

Review by Brien Malone: “Good Info, But Didn’t Like Kelby’s “Fooled Ya!” Sense of Humor”

This reviewer’s rating: 3/5, average reviewer rating: 4.5/5

I really wanted to write a glowing review for “The Digital Photography Book”… I’ve been looking for a good tome of insider tips for digital SLRs for a long time, so when I found Kelby’s book I was ecstatic! A quick skim showed many great tips; however, after reading the first page of chapter 1 where he carried on about the phrase “TACK SHARP” I began to lose faith.

Here is an excerpt (talking about the origins of the phrase Tack Sharp - meaning a “clear photo”):

Books Review of the Week: “Mannahatta”

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Every week, we showcase an Amazon user review from an item on the current Science and Technology Books Pop Fifty list. Here’s your review of the week for this week!

Mannahatta: A Natural History of New York City

Review of #1 “Mannahatta: A Natural History of New York City”

Review by Thomas Graves: “Not Quite What I expected”

This reviewer’s rating: 3/5, average reviewer rating: 4.5/5

This is a heavy and substantial tome (inevitably printed in China - where else?) which details the author’s amazing work in reconstructing the stunningly-beautiful natural environment of Manhattan Island in 1609, when the Dutch explorer Henry Hudson and his crew first laid eyes on it.
